How to use this category
Home and workshop pages turn measurements into orders. Concrete becomes yards and bags. Decking becomes boards, joists, and screws. Paint becomes cans after openings. Tile includes grout and waste. Gravel becomes both volume and tons because suppliers sell both ways. Fences become posts and pickets. Fuel, economy, and electricity are cost or efficiency, not the same question. The remap page is arithmetic on horsepower and torque with a drivetrain loss, and it does not write a tune or tell you to alter emissions equipment.
Order the material after the waste percent, not before. A slab, a footing, and a round column do not share a volume formula, which is why the concrete page asks for the shape. Decking fails when the gap is ignored, because the gap is part of the coverage of each board. Paint fails when doors and windows stay in the wall area. Tile fails when grout is treated as zero and waste is treated as pessimism. Flooring fails when box coverage is ignored and waste is treated as optional. Gravel fails when a cubic yard is ordered as if it were a ton. Fences fail when the post at the end is forgotten. Fuel cost and miles per gallon split money from economy so a cheap gallon is not confused with an efficient engine. Electricity is watts, hours, and a price per kilowatt-hour. The remap page multiplies horsepower and torque by gains you type and then stops. It will not tell you how to alter a control unit. Bring a tape measure and a waste percent you are willing to defend. A tidy order that runs short mid-job is more expensive than the extra bag you almost skipped. Read the unit on the ticket before you phone the supplier: yards, tons, cans, boards, and boxes are not interchangeable labels for the same number.
The cards above are the whole category, with one sentence on the job each page actually does. Open a page when that sentence matches the decision in front of you. If the sentence is close but the assumption is wrong, read the comparison section on the page before you copy a number into a report, a bid, or a lesson plan.
Worked examples are prefilled so the first result is auditable. Change one input and the ticket updates. The essay under the ticket walks the same arithmetic in sentences, then a second example, then the move that most often breaks the definition. Five questions at the end answer the objections a careful reader raises after seeing the figure. That structure is repeated because the habit of checking is the point, not because the formulas are the same.
Internal links leave this category only when the next formula genuinely lives next door. A standard deviation page may point at variance and at a t test. It should not point at a decking calculator. If you arrived from search on a broad word, use the one-sentence descriptions to discard the near misses. Near misses are how people report a p-value from a test they did not run.
Each worksheet in Home and Build keeps one H1, a canonical URL that matches the tool name, and meta text sized for search snippets. The steps are part of the page, not a hidden modal. If you teach from these pages, project the ticket and the assumptions together so students see the same definition you graded against.
When two tools in Home and Build look alike, read the blurb under each name before you commit. The difference is usually a divisor, a critical value, a waste percent, or a caution that belongs on one page and not the other. That difference is why the URLs stay separate.

Every home and build page
- Concrete Calculator Converts length, width, and depth into cubic yards and bag counts with waste.
- Decking Calculator Counts deck boards, joists, and screws from area, board width, gap, and joist spacing.
- Flooring Calculator Converts room dimensions into square footage and boxes of flooring with waste.
- Fuel Cost Calculator Trip fuel cost from distance, economy, and price per litre or gallon.
- Gravel Calculator Converts bed dimensions into cubic yards and tons using a density you can edit.
- Paint Calculator Estimates paint cans from wall area after subtracting openings, coats, and coverage.
- Tile Calculator Counts tiles for a floor or wall including grout gap and waste percent.
Questions people ask next
01How do I pick a page in Home and Build?
Read the one-sentence job under each name. Choose the page whose inputs match the information you actually have. If you have raw scores, do not open a page that asks only for a published r. If you have a known population sigma, the z test is available. If you do not, it is not.
02Are the formulas on these pages the same with different titles?
No. Titles match the job. Where two pages share algebra, the extra fields differ and the steps say so. Slovin does not apply a design effect. Yamane's page does. Wald is shown under Wilson, and Wilson is the headline on the proportion interval.
03Can I rely on a result from this category alone?
You can rely on the arithmetic if the inputs and the named assumptions are right. You cannot treat a health, pay, or legal-adjacent figure as personal professional advice. The disclaimer applies across the site, and sensitive pages repeat the limit beside the form.
04Why is the writing under the form so long?
Because a bare number is easy to misuse. The essay records the definition, a full example, a second example, and the mistakes that change the result. The length is the teaching, not a spacer.
05Where is the full list if this category is not the one I need?
Open All calculators from the header, or use search. Blogs linked from individual pages argue a single point at more length and are dated 25-10-2026.
